Triathlon comprises of three sports – swimming, cycling and running which are executed consecutively in the shortest possible time .
The Barbados Federation of Island Triathletes (BFIT) was formed in 1990 by a small group of practising triathletes at a time when triathlon was new to the world and Barbados.
The current membership of adults and kids is 55 and growing and participation in our events is significantly higher when you include residents and no-residents.
Our mission is to grow triathlon in Barbados and the region and increase awareness of the wonderful lifestyle that this sport can provide to people of all age groups and abilities.
We are currently expanding our kids program into the schools both primary and secondary with a view of it being one of the sports on the curriculum.
Barbados will be host to the first CARIFTA triathlon on Oct 7th and 8th 2017 and will cater to ages between 11 and 19 from all around the Caribbean region.
This event with include Triathlon and Aquathlon as well as Mixed relays.
Annually, there are a series of 9 kids triathlons held at the Aquatic Centre in Wildey and the kids are awarded with trophies at the end of the series.
Other major events on the BFIT calendar are:
BFIT’s greatest achievement to date is the development of Jason Wilson from the kids start line to the Olympic start line in Rio in 2016. He has done us proud.
Matthew Wright is following in his footsteps as both are training to reach the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Both have competed in the Pan Am Games and Commonwealth Games over past years.
