Barbados Olympic Association Inc. Launches Clean Up Initiative at Garfield Sobers Sports Complex<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bridgetown, Barbados \u0096 March 28, 2013<\/em> \u0096 The Barbados Olympic Association Inc. (BOA) recently acted on its obligation to promote environmentally friendly practices as part of its Sports For All mandate by installing ten specially made bins around the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex. The project was a collaboration with the Sanitation Service Authority.<\/p>\n

President of the BOA, Steve Stoute, expressed his pleasure with the project\u0092s success. \u0093It is the mandate of the Olympic Movement to improve the environment as well as the social wellbeing of a country and its citizens. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognises the opportunity to promote sustainable development through sport and the IOC uses its special fund, the Olympic Solidarity fund, to assist National Olympic Committees (NOCs) with projects that promote sport-related training, social programmes or those designed to raise environmental awareness. Sustainable development is now an integral part of any country\u0092s bidding proposal and this was a fundamental part of the recent London Olympics. We are especially pleased to partner with the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) in this initiative and we thank the public for their support,\u0094 he said.<\/p>\n

The bins have been placed at strategic points around the complex and already the BOA and the SSA have seen a difference. Michael Nicholls, Deputy Manager, Operations of SSA who was on hand for the official installation said that the SSA is proud to partner with the BOA on such a fantastic venture and that it will help to control litter in the area. \u0093We at the SSA greatly appreciate the effort being made and are very happy when people help us in improving our environment.\u0094<\/p>\n

Dave Farmer, Director of the Olympic Academy, reiterated the emphasis placed by the IOC on raising environmental awareness. \u0093This project has been made possible through the Olympic Solidarity Fund. In the next year we hope to add an additional 8-10 bins around the complex, ensuring maximum coverage.\u0094<\/p>\n

Signs have been mounted on each bin, urging Barbadians to \u0091pitch in\u0092. The project is a reinforcement of the BOA\u0092s commitment to protecting and preserving the environment of Barbados. The BOA is involved with numerous environmental projects including beach and area clean-ups.<\/p>\n
