The Women and Sport Commission of the Barbados Olympic Association Inc. will be celebrating International Women’s Day this year with an open Funathlon and National Sport Federation CrossFit Challenge on Saturday, March 22 at 4pm at the Olympic Centre in Wildey, St. Michael.

The Women and Sport Commission was formed in 1995 as the Women and Sport Working Group. In 2004, the group became a fully fledged commission that recommends policies to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to increase women’s participation in sport at all levels and to promote women in sport.  Their aim is to ensure that women are aware of their varied and often unequal realities so that they can make sound decisions as they engage in sport.

In 2014, the Women and Sport Commission will focus on three areas of sport to build a legacy of strong female participation, a legacy for reforming sport to reflect the Olympic values of respect, excellence and fair play. It is their goal to see many competent women take up positions of leadership in sport and guide female athletes to prominence.
