Barbadian female sports leaders, who are interested in becoming strong role models and catalysts for change to mentor the next generation of women in sport, are encouraged to apply for the 2024-25 Commonwealth Women’s Leadership Programme (CWLP).
The Commonwealth Sport is offering 15 scholarships to women from across the Commonwealth, aiming to elevate the visibility and participation of Commonwealth women in leadership roles and on boards. This initiative aims to help participants define their leadership aspirations and determine their strengths. Furthermore, it will assist them in understanding their contribution to promoting equality and leadership within the Commonwealth Sport Movement.
The Barbados Olympic Association Inc. (BOA), the local Commonwealth Games Association, will select and recommend one applicant for a scholarship. The BOA is therefore urging National Federations to ensure that all their female members are informed about this opportunity.
The one-year programme seeks to achieve five primary objectives: first, to empower women in sports by providing them with the resources to become effective leaders. Second, to develop leadership skills among Commonwealth women through personalized plans and mentorship. Third, to encourage the application of these skills for positive community impact through sports. Additionally, to foster networking and collaboration among women in sports leadership roles across the Commonwealth. Lastly, to advocate for gender diversity and women’s leadership in sports nationally and internationally.
Every scholarship recipient will be matched with an international mentor to craft their personal development plan (PDP), a document they will continuously refine over the year. The PDP will not only outline how to use the £5000 scholarship but also serve as a roadmap, aiding participants in understanding their current position, envisioning their future, strategising their path, and pinpointing the necessary support for their journey ahead in leadership.
Applicants are required to submit the following:
• Evidence of Barbadian nationality
• Motivational letter, including information on their involvement in sport (pdf)
• Curriculum Vitae (pdf)
• Transcript or copy of relevant qualifications
• Letter of endorsement from their National Federation confirming that they have been working or supporting sport (i.e., coaches, physiotherapists, administrators, volunteers, etc.) over the last 12 months (pdf)
• Completed application form (pdf)
Additionally, applicants must satisfy the General Eligibility Criteria stipulated by Commonwealth Sport and should submit any additional documents that might provide evidence of meeting any of those requirements.
