The International Marathon Medical Director’s Association congress will take place on Saturday October 10, 2015 at the Barbados Olympic Centre from 9:00 am to 12:45 pm.
The congress, themed ‘Dealing with Heat at Long Distance Running Events,’ will feature marathon medical directors from North and South America and Europe, including Marathon Medical Director for next year’s RIO 2016 Olympic Games, Dr. Paulo Afonso Lourega de Menezes.
The congress is part of IMMDA’s commitment and desire to educate and ensure participants of the world’s largest marathons and endurance events remain healthy and perform well. With increased numbers of participants in marathons and half marathons throughout the world, and increased attention to sudden death by the media and public, IMMDA has focused efforts to understanding this phenomena and how it can be prevented.
The congress will also centre heat illness and treatment, formulation of a heat plan for an event and suggestions for dealing with heat at next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the Run Barbados Series of events scheduled in December 2015.
The (IMMDA) is a global organization of marathons and distance races and i) promotes and studies the health of long distance runners, ii) promotes research into the cause and treatment of running injuries, iii) prevents the occurrence of injuries during mass participation runs, iv) offers guidelines for the provision of uniform marathon medical services throughout the world, and v) promotes a close working relationship between race and medical directors in achieving the above goals.
The current roster numbers approximately 300 events conducted in more than 90 countries across all seven continents, including some of the world’s largest and most prestigious marathons.
