International Rugby Returns to the Historic Garrison Savannah

The Barbados Rugby Football Union (BRFU or Rugby Barbados) will be hosting men’s and women’s teams from St. Vincent at the Historic Garrison Savannah on Saturday, September 30, 2023. Start time is 11:30 am. The Island 7s Tournament is presented by Rugby Barbados, Bajan Pride and H1X1 Barbarians clubs, and sponsored by Try Rugby Now and Rugby Barbados.

The St. Vincent squad is looking forward to the Island 7s Tournament and the spectators can expect a full day of excitement and intense competition. Rugby 7s is the short form of the traditional game structure, with seven players instead of the usual 15, and matches lasting a total of 15 minutes, comprising two seven-minute halves with a one-minute break at half-time. Since the players are covering the entire pitch, this calls for major cardio fitness and stamina. This format also allows an entire tournament to be played in a short period of time. After the long hiatus due to COVID-19, the entire rugby community is happy to be active once again.

The Get Into Rugby sessions for children aged five to 11 have also resumed at the Garrison, every Saturday morning, starting at 9:00 am. This is an introductory form, featuring fun activities and encouraging healthy physical activity while teaching the fundamentals of rugby. GIR does not allow contact for the novices, focusing instead on tag or touch rugby.

The BRFU is a member of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition.
