Even thousands of miles away from home, the athletes and officials of Team Barbados stood united on Wednesday, July 29, to pay homage to a National Hero. Coinciding with the state funeral and the National Day of Mourning in Barbados, the delegation representing the nation at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games paused to honour the life and legacy of the late National Hero, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers.
During a solemn, 15-minute flag-lowering ceremony held at the Flag Square in the Athletes’ Village, the National Flag of Barbados was lowered to half-staff. This gesture was witnessed by Team Barbados athletes, team officials including Chef de Mission, Dr. Adrian Lorde, Deputy Chef de Mission, Mona Alleyne and Administrator Glyne Clarke, as well as representatives of delegations from Bermuda, Cayman Islands, St. Lucia and the British Virgin Islands, serving as a powerful reminder of Sir Garry’s unparalleled sporting legacy and his immense contributions to both his homeland and the global sporting community.
Erskine Simmons, Secretary General of the Barbados Olympic Association Inc. (BOA), addressed those in attendance, reflecting on the National Hero’s foundational impact on cricket and Barbadian sport in general.
“A cricketing genius, Barbadian National Hero the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers excelled at all aspects of the game and remains widely regarded as the world’s greatest cricketer,” Simmons remarked. “As a batsman he was great, as a bowler superb, and his catching close to the wicket may have been equalled but never surpassed, and he was a brilliant fielder anywhere. Sobers was also an enterprising captain.”
From making his first-class debut at age 16 to shattering records with his individual Test score of 365 not out at just 21 years old, Simmons said Sir Garfield established a benchmark of excellence for generations of athletes across the Caribbean.
Particularly inspiring for a CAC Games delegation encompassing multiple disciplines, Secretary General Simmons also highlighted that Sir Garfield’s extraordinary natural athletic prowess extended far beyond the cricket pitch. The legendary figure proudly represented Barbados in golf, soccer, and basketball.
