Barbados Olympic Association Pays Tribute to the late The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers

The Barbados Olympic Association Inc. (BOA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of National Hero and Barbadian cricket icon – The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers. Affectionately known to many as “Sir Garry”, he was a towering figure and a sporting titan whose extraordinary life, unparalleled achievements, and enduring legacy transcended cricket, inspiring generations of Barbadians. He embodied the Olympic motto – Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together.

Sir Garfield is widely regarded as the greatest all-round cricketer. In more than 90 test matches for the West Indies, he scored 8,032 runs and brought global recognition to his country and the region. As captain of the West Indies team, he also helped lead the regional side to the top of the sport with his skill as a batsman, bowler, and fielder. His career remains an example of what can be achieved through talent and dedication.

 Although his greatest triumphs came on the cricket field, his influence reached far beyond the boundary. He served as a mentor, motivating countless sportspeople across multiple disciplines to pursue greatness, and excelled at whatever Sport he played, whether it was basketball, football, golf, table tennis or tennis.

BOA President Sandra Osborne noted that Sir Garfield’s impact on sport and national identity will be felt for years to come.

“Sir Garfield Sobers’ legacy will live on. He was a symbol of Barbadian excellence, resilience and possibility. Through his remarkable achievements, he showed our athletes that no dream is beyond reach and that a small island can produce giants who command the respect of the world. His legacy belongs not only to cricket but to every Barbadian who has been inspired to strive for excellence. We know how deeply Sir Garry was loved and the Barbados Olympic Association extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, and to the entire cricketing community. We celebrate a life that elevated our nation and whose influence will continue to inspire generations to come.”

The Board and Members of the BOA join the sporting community in mourning his loss. May he rest in peace.
