JetBlue Vacations Rugby 7s League Off to a Good Start

The inaugural JetBlue Vacations Rugby 7s League kicked off at the Historic Garrison Savannah on Saturday, May 11, 2019. This was the first of four days of rugby sevens action scheduled to take place on May 11 & 18, and June 1. The finals will take place on June 8.

Amid the usual race day excitement of the Garrison, on pitch action featured four teams, each with their vocal supporters cheering on the sidelines: Conquerorz, led by Dario Stoute, Southpaws under captain Sean Ward, Lucky 7 led by Enrique “Ox” Oxley and Bench Warmers led by Mikyle Walcott.

The first match was won handily by the Conquerorz as they defeated the determined and tenacious Southpaws 32-15. Junior player D’Andre Phillips scored three tries and one conversion, while Dario Stoute scored two tries. Veterans John Millar and Kean Blackman scored one try apiece for the losing team, with Miguel Toussaint adding another. The many conversion attempts were thwarted by the windy conditions that frustrated most of the kicks.

Next up was Lucky 7 versus Bench Warmers. The final score of Lucky 7 17 – 5 Bench Warmers did not do justice to the exciting, lightning quick match. For the Lucky 7, Kristopher Carrington scored two tries, Kevin Carter one try and one conversion, while Wilfred Boxhill scored the lone try for the Bench Warmers.

Perhaps inspired by their earlier hard-fought loss, the Bench Warmers then handed the Conquerorz a hearty 22-12 defeat in Match 3. Darien “Ducky” Walcott’s dazzling footwork and kicking skills (one try, one conversion) and Dario Stoute’s try were in vain, as the Bench Warmers roared to victory with two tries from Mikyle Walcott, a conversion and try from Brandon Wlcott, and a try from Jermaine “Roadblock” Bynoe.

Match 4 seemed oddly one-sided as the Southpaws allowed Lucky 7 to score only seven points, while making their 24 points look easy. John Millar ran over several opponents to score his pair of tries, Zayn Nicholson scored one try and one conversion, and Jae Bowen also scored a try.

The JetBlue Vacations Rugby 7s League action continues on Saturday, May 18 at the BRFU pitch on the Garrison, with kick off at 4:30 pm.
